When I was approached by close friend and talented vocalist Hosea Griffith about writing a recital closer, I was thrilled at the opportunity! Hosea was performing a set of spirituals and couldn't seem to find one to end the show just right so he asked if I would compose a new one. He and I flipped through a very old hymnal and found the hymn "Happy Days Will Come Again", liked the text, and decided to reset it to new music. For this piece I was influenced by the styles of H.T. Burleigh and Moses Hogan, who were both instrumental in bringing the spiritual successfully to classical music.
